Even with the elimination to Borussia Dortmund (5-4, on aggregate), in the Champions League, Atlético de Madrid guaranteed a place in the 2025 World Cup. The team led by Diego Simeone is the last Spanish team to qualify for the competition. Each country is entitled to only two representatives.

Brazil, however, will have three representatives: Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense, champions of the Libertadores in 2021, 2022 and 2023. If another Brazilian who is not part of the trio becomes champion of the tournament in 2024, the country will be able to have four representatives in the Worldwide.

The other Spanish team fighting for the spot was Barcelona, which was eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, after losing 4-1 in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The champions of the last three editions of the Champions League – Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea – have also qualified for the 2025 World Cup. Of the teams that remain in the Champions League, only Arsenal is not qualified for the World Cup. The English team can get the spot if they are the champions. The final takes place on June 1st, in London.

Mikel Arteta’s men still play this Wednesday against Bayern Munich. The first game ended in a 2-2 draw. If that doesn’t happen, the last European spot will go to Salzburg, from Austria.

The Club World Cup, which will gain a new format from next year, will feature 32 teams and will take place in the United States between June and July 2025.
