World champion in synchronized swimming Varvara Subbotina retires

Four-time world champion in synchronized swimming Varvara Subbotina retired from swimming at the age of 23. This was reported by the athlete’s coach Tatyana Danchenko, whose words are reported by RIA Novosti.

“She hasn’t competed for two years, so it didn’t come as a surprise to me,” Danchenko said, adding that she had known about the athlete’s decision for a long time.

Subbotina missed the Tokyo Olympics due to problems with her eardrum. She later underwent surgery on her leg. The Russian has four victories at the World Championships in groups and combinations and three gold medals at the European Championships in solos and duets.

Russians and Belarusians were allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, representatives of team sports are prohibited from participating in the tournament. Thus, domestic synchronized swimmers will miss the Games in Paris, since the medals will be played out in duets and groups.
