Defender Josip Stanisic spoke this Thursday about Xabi Alonso and regretted the coach’s stay at Bayer Leverkusen. The athlete is on loan to the leader of the German Championship from Bayern Munich and was hoping to meet the Spanish coach again next season, when he returns to the Bavarians.
“I’m happy that he’s happy here, but for me it’s a shame, of course. I admit that I wanted a different outcome, but it is what it is,” Stanisic said in an interview with the newspaper AS.
Last week, Xabi Alonso announced that he would stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season. The coach had his name speculated at Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but decided to continue the work that is currently being carried out.
The German defender, who also plays as a right back, took advantage of the opportunities given by the Spanish coach and took over the team’s starting role in the middle of this season. Stanisic also commented on his initial period at the club and whether he decided to move to Leverkusen.
“I was right to come to Leverkusen. I hoped to get minutes and continue to evolve. It was difficult in the first half of the season, I was often dissatisfied. In the end, however, what matters is the team, which has grown brutally. The best thing is that I can be champion despite leaving Bayern. I’m enjoying it, because of these things I’m a football player”, he concluded.
In total, the 24-year-old German defender participated in 28 games and, in addition to playing his role in defense, also contributed offensively with one goal and three assists.
Bayer Leverkusen is undefeated this season and currently occupies first place in the German Championship, with 73 points in 27 games, 13 more than second-placed Bayern Munich. Furthermore, the team is in the quarterfinals of the Europa League and the final of the German Cup.
The Bundesliga leader takes the field this Saturday, at 10:30 am (Brasília time), against Union Berlin, away from home, for the 28th round of the competition.
