Aksenov said that Crimean athletes will not go to the 2024 Olympic Games
The head of Crimea, Sergei Aksenov, announced in his Telegram channel the refusal of local athletes to go to the 2024 Olympic Games.
“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) betrayed the Olympic principles and turned into an instrument of political revenge and settling scores with countries disliked by the West. They don’t hide it,” he said. Aksenov noted that he fully supports the athletes’ decision.
Earlier, IOC head Thomas Bach spoke about the creation of a special commission that monitors statements by Russian athletes in the media and on the Internet. The Ukrainian side is also involved in this.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the Armed Forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
