Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R) has won the sprint and in the rain the second stage of Itzulia, which was held this afternoon between the towns of Irún and Kanbo (160 km). As a consequence of two falls occurred in the last four kilometers, the peloton arrived divided at the finish line, where the young French cyclist won, adding his third victory this season.

Lapeira overtook the Italian in a long sprint on the wet Kanbo road Samuele Battistella (Astana) and the Belgian Louis Vervaeke (Soudal Quick Step). The Kern Pharma cyclist Pau Miguel has been fourth and the Movistar Alex Aranburu and Gonzalo Serrano They finished fifth and eighth. The Uruguayan Guillermo Thomas Silvafrom Caja Rural, was sixth.

The falls that have been recorded in the final kilometers of the stage have not been serious, but they have caused the peloton to be cut off and several important riders such as Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Jay Vine (UAE), Carlos Soler (UAE) or Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS) have wasted time.

In that sense, the Ormaiztegi runner is no longer in the ‘Top 10’ of the race and loses 44 seconds compared to Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe), who remains the leader, now with 10 seconds of advantage over the Dane Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek).

The other great favorites, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step), who took a second in the intermediate sprint, and the Danish Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), are now third and fifth, 10 and 15 seconds away respectively.

In the middle of both, Spanish has been placed Juan Ayuso (UAE), who achieved two seconds in the bonus sprint and is now fourth, 14 seconds behind Roglic. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain) is tenth, 25 seconds behind the leader.
