The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues, arrived in London last Thursday to watch the Brazilian team’s game against England. The president commented, this Friday, on the cases of rape convictions of former players Robinho and Daniel Alves.
“I have a lot of trust in justice, I really do. The entire legal process took place, they were given the chance to contradict themselves and the conviction came. Everyone needs to pay for the crime they committed. I know Daniel Alves’ family, who are honorable. What What happened is sad, but everyone has to pay for their crimes,” he said in an interview with Uol.
The president of Palmeiras, Leila Pereira, current head of the Seleção’s delegation in the friendlies against England and Spain, spoke out earlier about the cases. On the occasion, Leila criticized the CBF’s lack of positioning and commented on the convictions. Ednaldo Rodrigues, in turn, denied that the entity was avoiding dealing with the issue.
“It was the first time I was asked about the subject, the CBF was not avoiding dealing with the subject and we never ran away from it. There was never silence. I always pass in front of journalists and they had never questioned me. You are asking me about the convictions and I am responding Whoever committed crimes needs to pay for them”, he continued.
Earlier, at a press conference, full-back Danilo, who will be the captain of the Seleção in the game against England, called for CBF’s awareness plans from the youth categories down. The duel against the English takes place this Saturday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Wembley.
The cases of Robinho and Daniel Alves
Daniel Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for raping a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub at the end of 2022. However, last Wednesday, a Spanish court authorized the release of the former player, who is in pre-trial detention. 14 months ago, after paying a bail of one million euros (R$5.4 million), while the appeals against his conviction are analyzed. Dani Alves, however, is still in prison.
Robinho was sentenced in three instances by the Italian courts to nine years in prison in 2017 for the gang rape of a young Albanian woman, committed in January 2013, in Milan, when the former player was playing for Milan. Last Wednesday, the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) ordered Robinho to serve his sentence in Brazil. With the request for habeas corpus denied, the former player was arrested by the Federal Police, in Santos, last Thursday night.
