Former IIHF President Fasel called himself a fan of Russian figure skater Valieva

Former president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Swiss Rene Fasel, supported Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, disqualified for doping. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Fasel called himself a fan of Valieva. “She’s a great skater and I hope she’ll be ready to come back. I was in Beijing when all this happened, I just feel sorry for her,” he said.

Earlier, Kremlin official Dmitry Peskov commented on the fact that at the opening of the Games of the Future, Russian President Vladimir Putin was sitting next to the figure skater. He stated that the head of state supports Valieva.

On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. The athlete and her partners on the Russian national team were deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
