Boxer Pacquiao banned from 2024 Olympics due to age
Boxer Manny Pacquiao has been banned from the 2024 Olympics. This was announced by the President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the Philippines, Abraham Tolentino, as quoted by Boxing News 24.
“It’s a shame that our boxing icon was excluded due to age and that everyone needs to go through qualifying events to be able to compete at the Games in Paris,” Tolentino said. Previously, the Philippine NOC sent a request to the International Olympic Committee for Pacquiao’s admission to the tournament in violation of the age limit.
According to the rules, boxers aged 19 to 40 can take part in the Olympics. At the time of the Games in Paris, Pacquiao will be 45 years old.
Pacquiao is a former eight-division world champion. In total, he has 62 wins, eight losses and two draws. He had his last professional fight in August 2021, when he lost to Cuban Yordenis Ugas after 12 rounds.
