Ukrainian Kalinina refused to shake hands with Russian Samsonova, who defeated her.
Russian tennis player Lyudmila Samsonova defeated Ukrainian Angelina Kalinina in the second round match of the WTA 500 tournament in Abu Dhabi (UAE). This was reported by a Lenta.ru correspondent.
The meeting ended with a score of 6:1, 6:3. After the game, Kalinina refused to shake Samsonova’s hand. Also, the athletes did not exchange touches of rackets, which are sometimes replaced by handshakes.
Earlier, the President of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpishchev, appreciated the refusal of Ukrainian women to shake hands with Russian women after matches. “I believe that sport is outside of politics, it must adhere to certain standards of behavior that should exist in all sports,” he said.
Ukrainian tennis players usually do not shake hands with Russians and Belarusians and do not take joint photos after matches. In response to this, spectators sometimes boo the athletes.
