Maria Zakharova called Valieva’s disqualification an example of the politicization of sports
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova responded to the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to disqualify figure skater Kamila Valieva. Her words are quoted by TASS.
She called the incident another example of the politicization of sports. “Another manifestation of unscrupulous competition to neutralize one of the strongest representatives of figure skating. The Russian side will continue to defend the rights of our athlete before international structures,” Zakharova said.
Earlier, RUSADA General Director Veronika Loginova announced the presence of a person who was an accomplice or initiator of doping by an athlete. She called for his criminal punishment.
On January 29, CAS suspended Valieva for four years for using the banned drug trimetazidine. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021.
