Transgender swimmer Thomas sues CAS over ban from tournaments
American transgender swimmer Leah Thomas has filed a claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This is reported on the court’s website.
The reason was the ban on participation in women’s tournaments. Thomas said fair competition is a legitimate sporting goal and regulating transgender women’s participation in swimming is appropriate. In her opinion, the new rules of World Aquatics contradict the Olympic Charter.
On August 4, 2022, World Aquatics tightened the rules for transgender eligibility in women’s competitions. Transgender athletes must complete their transition by the age of 12 when puberty begins. Also, their testosterone levels should not exceed 2.5 nanomoles per liter.
In March of that year, Leah Thomas won the NCAA Division I title. The athlete won the 500-yard (457.2 meters) freestyle, ahead of Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalists Emma Weyant and Erica Sullivan. This caused discontent among rivals.
