In the early 1980s, musicians from two bands, Poland and Novelty Poland, decided to join forces and played a concert under the latter’s name. In this way, a new team was formed, which originally included the main initiators of this idea, i.e. Piotr Wieteska, as well as Tadeusz Bagan and Dariusz Gierszewski.
How was the band Kult created? Kazik Staszewski reveals the background of the creation of the name
Almost immediately after their joint performance, they started working on the repertoire. They focused mainly on ensuring that the songs had a unique sound and that their lyrical content was unconventional. They were mainly inspired by punk and British new wave, but their compositions also contain elements of psychedelic rock and jazz. Finally, it was time to find a suitable name, as they did not want to be associated with their previous attempts to conquer the scene. They had plenty of ideas and considered several different options for a long time until the final decision was made. – . Sounds good. Simply. The end – the leader of the group, Kazik Staszewski, in an interview for the book “I’m going where I’m going. Autobiography” by Rafał Księżyk.
The name had no hidden meaning for them, although fans have been adding their ideologies to it for years, inventing more and more interesting arguments. However, musicians have been claiming for years that they mainly wanted to choose a word that would be short and therefore easy to remember. – They added additional meanings to us. We struggled about what to name the band for a long time, we didn’t like any of the proposals, said the singer in the same conversation. It is worth mentioning that not all members of the team were fully convinced of this choice from the beginning, especially since there were associations with a less flattering term. – Wieteska and I both had the impression that when someone asked: “What band do you play in?” so we were ashamed to say “Cult” because the question was: “Glut in what?” – he recalled with a laugh.
This was Kult’s debut on stage. After it, the band changed almost its entire repertoire
The work lasting many months finally resulted in the first successes, or at least that’s what they were counting on at the time. They began preparations for , but few wanted to accept the newly formed band. Finally, the Warsaw club “Remont” expressed its willingness to make the hall available to them, on whose stage Kult had its debut performance on July 7, 1982. However, they were not the only stars of the evening, because on the same day the punk band TZN Xenna also performed live. – Maybe 50 people showed up – Staszewski said about the concert, although some sources indicate that there were no more than 35 fans gathered.
The performance, although completely different than they expected, turned out to be a valuable tip and the beginning of further important changes. One of the drastic decisions was to terminate cooperation with Dariusz Gierszewski, who was not fully fulfilled in his role and was able to fit into the atmosphere created by the other musicians. – He behaved as if he were in the Rolling Stones – said the leader of the cult, adding that at that time he had the image of a quiet boy and, what is difficult to understand, he often read the Bible on stage. The second major move was the replacement of the repertoire, as a result of which almost all of the songs were thrown away except for the songs “Krew Boga” and “Vodka”. Although the line-up changed several times over the decades, Kazik Staszewski made sure that the band’s position did not decline. Today, Kult is still one of the most popular bands in Poland, and its fans fill the halls where concerts are organized.
