Russian saber fencer Konstantin Lokhanov has announced his desire to obtain US citizenship. USA Today learned about this.
According to the source, the athlete intends to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris this summer. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the National Fencing Federation have expressed support for this initiative.
Previously, two more Russian fencers – epee fencers Sergei and Violetta Bida – wanted to compete for the US team. Sergei also plans to join the American team for the 2024 Games.
In 2022, Lokhanov divorced Olympic fencing champion Sofia Pozdnyakova due to moving to the USA. He invited his wife to go with him, but the athlete decided to stay in Russia and file for divorce.
Lokhanov participated in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but did not win any medals. He is a two-time world junior saber champion.
