VTsIOM: figure skater Roman Kostomarov named athlete of 2023 in Russia
Olympic champion in figure skating Roman Kostomarov has been named athlete of 2023 in Russia, according to the results of polls by VTsIOM.
Eight percent of respondents chose the former figure skater. In second place was figure skater Kamila Valieva, who received five percent of the votes. Third place was taken by hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, skier Alexander Bolshunov, as well as figure skaters Evgenia Medvedeva and Alexandra Trusova, who each had two percent of the votes.
Voting was carried out by telephone. 1.6 thousand Russians over 18 years old took part in it. Respondents could propose up to three names.
In January, Kostomarov was hospitalized with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left. Later, he was fitted with prosthetic legs and right arm.
After the installation of prostheses, Kostomarov continued to actively engage in sports. On December 17, he took to the ice on skates and showed a joint performance with Tatyana Navka.
