Maria Zakharova said that sanctions are aimed at destroying Russian football
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova named the purpose of sanctions against Russian football. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Zakharova said that international organizations, by not allowing teams to participate in tournaments, want to destroy Russian football. “Despite external pressure, we will continue to organize and take part in major sporting competitions and events on our territory,” she said.
On December 2, it became known that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) did not include the Russian national team among the participants in the draw for the 2024/2025 Nations League season.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the finals of major tournaments.
