USADA called figure skater Kamila Valieva’s doping case a travesty
United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Director General Travis Tygart spoke about the ongoing hearings in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. His words are quoted by USA Today.
Tygart called the incident a travesty. He said the athlete’s case, which has prevented Team USA from medaling at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, has undermined Americans’ trust in the anti-doping system. “Justice has failed,” he stressed.
Earlier on November 9, it became known that Valieva would again appear before the arbitrators of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. Prior to this, hearings in her case took place from September 26 to 29.

On January 13, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency informed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that Valieva was not guilty of an anti-doping rule violation. WADA was dissatisfied with this verdict of the Disciplinary Committee and filed an appeal with CAS.
At the 2022 Olympics, Valieva won gold in the team competition, but the winners – the teams of Russia, the USA and Japan – were not awarded due to the doping scandal involving her. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021.
