In Panama, an American shot and killed two environmental activists who staged a protest on a highway, RBC reports.

Retired lawyer Kenneth Darlington, 77, was arrested. He was charged with murder and illegal possession of weapons.

Protesters set up a highway checkpoint to protest Panamanian authorities’ agreement with a Canadian company to operate the country’s largest open-pit copper mine. After getting out of the car, the man told the other passengers in the car: “This ends today.” He approached a group of protesters, which consisted mainly of teachers. He then pulled a gun from his pocket and began to clear the barricade of car tires and logs on the highway himself, while continuing to argue with the protesters.

The video published by the Daily Mail newspaper shows that several men then approached the pensioner. After the conversation, Darlington shot two protesters. One of them died on the spot, the other was hospitalized, but died in the hospital.

Darlington, a US citizen of Panamanian descent, was previously arrested in Panama in 2005 after weapons including an AK-47 and M-16 were found in his Panama City apartment. However, he was acquitted after the court accepted his claim that the weapon was part of a collection.
