IOC head Bach: some countries violate recommendations for the return of Russians
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach identified the main obstacle to the return of Russian athletes to the international arena. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Bach said the IOC had initially looked closely at what was happening in the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, in particular at the World and European Championships. “Unfortunately, we saw that some countries violate our recommendations and interfere with the unifying force of the Olympic movement,” said the head of the IOC.
On October 12, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) until further notice due to the inclusion of representatives of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in the organization. It was noted that the ROC will no longer be able to receive funds from the IOC.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security forces of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
