A Russian NHL club player answered a question about concerns about being drafted into the army

Sergachev said that he is not afraid to come to Russia because of conscription into the army

Russian defenseman of the National Hockey League (NHL) Tampa Bay Lightning club Mikhail Sergachev answered a question about concerns about being drafted into the army. The athlete spoke out in an interview with the YouTube channel “Caution: Sobchak.”

“Are Russian NHL players afraid to come to Russia for fear of military service? I didn’t have such prejudices, I came, I feel calm,” Sergachev said. The hockey player noted that he had not thought about what he would do if he received a summons.

In July 2022, CSKA goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov was detained on suspicion of evading military service, after which he was sent to serve in the Russian Navy. Upon returning from the army, the athlete signed a new contract with CSKA, but the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) disqualified him for four months, prohibiting the red-blues from making international transfers for a year. The IIHF refused to register a contract with Fedotov because of the player’s existing agreement with the NHL club Philadelphia Flyers, which the defender signed in May 2022.

Sergachev has been playing for Tampa since 2017. He won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2020 and 2021.
