Wiener opposed participation in the 2024 Olympic Games under a neutral flag

Wiener said she does not accept the requirement to compete under a neutral flag

President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner spoke out against the participation of the Russian team in the 2024 Olympic Games under a neutral flag. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Wiener said that Russia does not understand and does not accept this demand. “Why are we going if there won’t be a single fan there who will raise the flag and chant the anthem?” – she added. The specialist noted that at the Games in Tokyo in 2021 and Beijing in 2022, athletes were at least allowed to use Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1 instead of the anthem.

On April 7, Wiener supported the idea of Russian athletes competing under a neutral flag. “Some people think this is a betrayal? “The theory is dry, my friend, but the tree of life is lushly green.” If they don’t allow it, we’ll compete in other competitions. Everything will be fine with us anyway,” she added, emphasizing that we need to go to international competitions in any case.

On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
