The Ministry of Sports refused to pay WADA’s annual contribution of $1.2 million
The Russian Ministry of Sports stated that they refuse to pay annual fees to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) under the same conditions. The statement is reported by TASS.
The Ministry of Sports explained that Russia’s contribution should be $1.2 million. This figure was calculated based on the country’s scale of contributions to the Council of Europe, however, on March 16, 2022, the Russian Federation ceased its membership in the Council of Europe, so the contribution for 2023 was not paid.
The Ministry emphasized that WADA’s annual budget is formed on the basis of the 2003 Copenhagen Anti-Doping Declaration, which is not legally binding for states. However, it is noted that Russia has already initiated the issue of developing a funding formula for countries that are not members of the Council of Europe.
In December 2019, the WADA Executive Committee decided to deprive Russia of the right to host the Olympic Games and World Championships, and Russian athletes to compete without a flag and anthem for four years. The reason was the deprivation of RUSADA’s compliance status. In November 2022, WADA decided to extend the suspension of RUSADA.
