One in five adults on the planet, or 42% of the population, will be obese by 2025. Experts from the National Research University Higher School of Economics came to this conclusion, RBC writes, citing the results of a study based on the analysis of big data in the iFORA system, as well as expert sessions and a Delphi survey with the participation of more than 400 scientists.
Scientists have warned that the obesity situation will be worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is contributing to the closure of sports venues. In addition, the modern human diet mainly consists of highly processed foods that contain excessive amounts of salt or sugar. Low physical activity and abuse of alcohol and smoking also contribute to obesity. Physical activity could save up to 5 million people annually; moderate exercise (only 2.5 hours a week) reduces mortality by 10%, experts say.
According to the material, by 2025, 18% of men and 21% of women will be obese. Also, 205 million children aged five to 19 will be overweight. At the same time, the situation with obesity in Russia is getting worse every year. If in 1993 8.3% of men and 23.2% of women suffered from obesity in Russia, then in 2017 the disease affected 28.1% of men and 32.1% of women, and in 2021 – 30.1% of men and 36.7% women.
The study was carried out by scientists from the Institute of Statistical Research and Economics of Knowledge and experts from the UNESCO Department of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, as well as from the National Center for Interdisciplinary Research of Human Potential.
