Rodnina called Lithuania’s decision to deprive figure skater Drobyazko of citizenship window dressing
Three-time Olympic champion in figure skating and State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina explained the decision to deprive figure skater Margarita Drobyazko of Lithuanian citizenship. Her words are quoted by Sport24.
“They treated Drobyazko terribly. I perceive the whole story as window dressing on Lithuania’s part. They just reminded us of ourselves,” Rodnina said. In her opinion, the decision to exclude Drobyazko from the European Championships should be made by the International Skating Union.
On September 15, it became known that Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda had deprived Drobiazko of his citizenship. The reason was the athlete’s performance in Tatiana Navka’s show in Russia. The figure skater said that she was not ready to give up Russia in order to preserve her Lithuanian passport.
Drobyazko acquired Lithuanian citizenship in 1993. Together with Povilas Vanagas, they represented the country at the Olympic Games five times. The couple has two bronze medals at the European Championships and another at the World Championships.
