Neymar admitted that he had not thought about the possibility of one day breaking Pele’s record
Striker Neymar commented on his record for goals for the Brazil national football team. His words are quoted by the Associated Press.
The forward surpassed the achievement of three-time world champion Pele as part of the Brazilian team. “I want to say that this does not mean that I am better than him [Пеле] or any other national team player. I always wanted to write my story in the national team, and today I succeeded,” said the footballer. He admitted that he had not thought about the possibility of one day breaking this record.
Earlier on September 9, Neymar scored his 78th and 79th goals for the Brazilian national team. The forward scored a brace in the home match of the 1st round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup against Bolivia. The meeting ended with a score of 5:1 in favor of the hosts. Pele has 77 goals in official matches for the Brazilian national team.
Pele is a three-time world football champion. He played for Santos for 18 years and became the champion of Brazil six times with the team. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee recognized the forward as the athlete of the century.
Neymar took part in three World Cups as part of the Brazilian national team. At the 2014 tournament the team took fourth place, and in 2018 they reached the quarterfinals.
