Southampton closes ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Caballero for one month contract

To replace the injured Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster, Southampton went to the market and signed Argentine “Willy” Caballero. At 40, the former Chelsea and Manchester City goalkeeper arrives at the Saints with a short contract, valid until January 5, 2022.

Hired for a month, Caballero has already undergone the medical exams last Monday and, this Tuesday, he trained alongside his teammates. On Saturday, the goalkeeper is already in action against Arsenal, at the Emirates Stadium, and, next Wednesday, he will face Crystal Palace, at Selhurst Park.

The Argentine will play at Southampton’s stadium, St. Mary’s’ Stadium, for the first time just the other Saturday, against Brentford.

Revealed by Boca Juniors, Caballero had his heyday in Spain, when he played for Elche and Malaga. His prominence at Malaga took him to Manchester City in 2014, where he played 48 times, leaving the team to join Chelsea in 2017, where he played 38 times.

For Argentina, the goalkeeper was called up five times and played in the 2018 World Cup, where he was marked by poor performance against Croatia, being replaced by goalkeeper Armani.

Caballero left Chelsea at the end of last season and has been free on the market since then. During this clubless time, the Argentinian trained with the AFC Wimbledon squad to keep himself in shape.
