A Brazilian Team debuted on the right foot Women’s World Cup. This Monday, the team beat Panama by 4-0, in Group F, at the Hindmarsh Stadium, in Adelaide, Australia. Coach from Brazil, Pia explained why she started the match with Lauren among the starting defenders. The Swede passed over Kathellen and Mônica to start with the ex-São Paulo.
“The reason why we didn’t choose Kathellen or Mônica is because, after training, I realized that we need all three if we want to win many games. And Lauren had a performance in training where she was one of the best, so it was easier for us (technical commission) to choose Lauren”, highlighted the coach in a press conference.
Pia also valued the tactical role of Ary Borges, who scored a hat-trick on his debut against the Panamanians. “A player like Ary, who scored three goals, has an attacking personality, a field coverage that helps the team a lot. She is a happy person and that happiness is contagious, and that is great for the team”.
“It is very important nowadays for you to do your homework, and we watched many Panama games. I am happy that they understood and embraced this way of playing”, continued the commander of the Brazilian team, who opted to leave Marta on the bench until the 75th minute of departure.
During the press conference, Pia highlighted the importance of having a lasting job in charge of Brazil. The Swede arrived in office in 2019 and, since then, has given the team a style of play, also winning a Copa América in the period.
“I’ve been working on these terms (compression, supersubs) four years ago. I think they show that they respected Panama the way they played. Defensively, Rafaelle did very well today. We also talk a lot about positions, and when we talk about the attack, the athletes had many different solutions”, argued the commander.
The technique added: “The third goal, for example, was beautiful, and it wasn’t something we taught. It’s a typical Brazilian goal, with a lot of emotion. Unpredictable, with a lot of technique. If you repeat something many, many times, one hour you manage to execute it. In the first game of the World Cup, you see a little of the way Brazil plays”.
Finally, Pia still showed not to worry about the great chances of goals lost by Brazil in the confrontation against Panama.
“It’s difficult to score goals, you saw. We scored four goals today and I’m very happy. As long as we can create goalscoring chances, I’m not worried. I’m very satisfied with the way we played today, with the combinations and with the fact that Panama didn’t manage to score goals”, evaluated the Sweden coach.
“I didn’t know exactly what to expect, because there are some young and inexperienced players who have never participated before in a World Cup. I’m very proud of them, the way they played. I think it’s important to look at this game and be calm, tomorrow is another day”, he concluded.
Now, the Brazilian team is back on the pitch against France, next Saturday. The clash is scheduled for 7 am (Brasília time), at the Lang Park Stadium, in Brisbane, Australia. The confrontation marks the duel between the two big favorites for the leadership of Group F, which also has Jamaica and Panama.
