Lionel Messi starts on the bench in his first game for Inter Miami

Star Lionel Messi will start on the bench in his first game for Inter Miami, this Friday, in the opening of the Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul, from Mexico.

Messi, 36, started training with the new team earlier this week. Football fans expect the Argentine star to perform for a few minutes in front of his new fans at the DRV PNK stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Veteran Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, recently hired by Inter Miami, also does not appear among the starting lineup of the team coached by Argentine Gerardo Martino.

The clash between Inter Miami and Cruz Azul, scheduled to start at 9:00 pm, Brasília time, will inaugurate the new Leagues Cup, a tournament that brings together for the first time the 47 teams of the MLS (United States League) and the Liga MX (Mexican League).

The competition, which will be fully played in the United States and Canada until the final (August 19), gained global appeal with Messi’s decision to start a new stage of his career in Miami after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
