Healthy perfectionism can help a person develop and grow, while pathological perfectionism, on the contrary, can lead to anxiety, depression, and other negative consequences. Lyubov Krushinskikh, a medical psychologist, told about this in an interview with Life.

According to the expert, people with pathological perfectionism often set themselves unrealistically high standards and demands, which can lead to excessive tension, burnout, exhaustion and low self-esteem. She also listed signs of unhealthy perfectionism: excessive self-criticism, striving for perfection and too high standards, constantly comparing yourself to others and feeling inadequate in this comparison.

It can also manifest itself through a tendency to negative thoughts and assumptions about the future, especially when it comes to the result of work. People with over-perfectionism often refuse support from others and do not maintain a balance between work and personal life.

“People suffering from pathological perfectionism tend to delve into the little things, forgetting about the main thing and paying excessive attention to details that are not crucial. For example, they cannot effectively prepare for the exam due to the fact that they delve into every concept, every new word, examining them to the smallest detail, ”Krushinskikh said.

Taking regular breaks, exercising, getting enough rest, and socializing with friends and family can help perfectionists maintain their health and improve their quality of life, according to the psychologist.
