Despite the transfer not yet being made official, goalkeeper André Onana confirmed his agreement with Manchester United and has already declared himself to the English club. The Cameroonian will leave the Inter Milanin a transfer that revolves around 55 million euros (about R$ 297 million at current prices), according to the English press.
“I’m someone who is always looking for new challenges, and playing in Premier League, at a club like United, is irresistible. Everyone wanted this to happen”, said the athlete in an interview with the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
The goalkeeper completed praising the history of the English club. “I’m going to play in a big league and at a big club, which has a huge history. Just like Inter (Milan).”
With his arrival at United, Onana will be reunited with coach Erik Ten Hag, who led him during five seasons at Ajax.
“I’m really looking forward to starting this new and exciting adventure with a coach who, in my opinion, is a maestro,” concluded the 27-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Onana joined Inter Milan for free last year after deciding not to renew his contract with the Dutch club. In his only season with the Italian team, he managed to reach the Champions League final, but ended up with the runner-up after the team lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
Now, his next spell in European football will be at Manchester United, which has been looking for a goalkeeper since the end of the 2022/23 season. The search intensified when the Spanish David De Gea announced his departure from the club after 12 years, as he could not reach an agreement with the board for the renewal of his contract.
