Russian grandmaster Kirill Alekseenko moved to the Austrian national team
Russian grandmaster Kirill Alekseenko changed his Russian sports citizenship to an Austrian one. This was reported on the website of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
It is noted that the organization confirmed the transition of the chess player under the new flag on July 7. Alekseenko will be able to play for the new national team starting from July 8.
26-year-old Alekseenko is ranked 63rd in the FIDE rating. He participated in the 2020-2021 Candidates Tournament and finished seventh out of eight with 5.5 points in 14 games.
FIDE allowed Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete in international competitions under a neutral flag until January 1, 2024. After this period, athletes will be returned the right to compete under the flag of their country, unless another decision is made before that.
