Cavendish before the dream of surpassing Merckx in the record of stage victories in the Tour
The possibility of the British Mark Cavendish (Astana) winning a stage in the Tour which begins on Saturday, July 1 in Bilbao and achieve the record of 35 victories in the “Grande boucle” will unot one of the great incentives of the test which will have its capital in Euskal Herria during the first three days.
That will be the number one goal of the Astana Qazaqstan team formation, to see Cavendish undo the tie of 34 stage wins that share with the legendary Eddy Merckx.
His victory in Rome in the last stage of the Giro d’Italia boosted the morale of Cavendish, who showed that his 38 years he still has dynamite in his legs and that the Tour record is possible.
Astana will go on stage with the objective of the “Express of Man” and with the Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko for the general. The Kazakh formation will complete the squad with the Spaniards Luis León Sánchez and David de la Cruz, the Dutch Cees Bol, the Kazakh Yevgeniy Fedorov, the Italian Gianni Moscon and the Colombian Harold Tejada.
