Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) was proclaimed champion of the Tour de Suisse 2023 this Sunday June 18 after finishing third in the last stage. Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates) claimed victory in the time trial.

It was enough for Skjelmose to finish third in the final time trial, nine seconds behind Ayuso (32:25)to maintain his advantage in the general classification, in which he finally also surpassed the Barcelonan runner by nine seconds, second ahead of the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), third in the stage of this Sunday.

In the struggle to win the final triumph, Remco Evenepoel was the first to beat Stefan Bissegger’s time (EF Education-EasyPost) that until the finish line was the best of the day. However, after the Belgian, Juan Ayuso arrived to set the best time of the stage. Therefore, only the leader remained to arrive. Skjelmose had to come within 18 seconds of Ayuso, and the Dane did so. The wearer of the yellow jersey crossed the finish line 9 seconds behind the winner of the time trial

In this way, the Danish Mattias Skjelmose succeeds the British Geraint Thomas in the list of winnersall in an edition marked by the unfortunate death of Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder (Bahrain Victorious) on June 16, who suffered a serious fall in the fifth stage.
