The star of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Kylian Mbappé, reaffirmed this Thursday that he has no alternative but to remain at the club in the French capital, refusing to enter into a dispute with the entity or influence its departure after the end of his contract in June 2024.
“I already answered. I said that my goal is to stay at the club, it’s my only option. I didn’t believe that a letter could kill or offend someone,” said the 2018 world champion, referring to the email sent on Monday to the Parisian leaders about his decision not to activate the option for another year at PSG.
Mbappé spoke to the media as captain of the France national team, on the eve of his team’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar.
The striker was asked about the reaction from PSG, who said they were now willing to sell him on the market ahead of the new season if he persisted in his intention not to renew beyond 2024.
“No, not many things surprise me,” he replied.
He also denied having disrupted France’s concentration by sending his letter four days before an international match.
“I accept everything, people can speak, criticize, I understand. People don’t have all the data. I know why I do what I do and why I say what I say. There’s no problem with that,” he said.
“I have a responsibility as captain. It’s not noise that will make me shirk that responsibility. It’s not in my temperament to shirk,” he added.
Mbappé was also asked about the reaction on Wednesday from the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who assured that he will “try to put pressure on him” to stay at PSG.
“He wants me to stay in Paris and my aim is to stay, so we’re in the same place,” he replied.
France coach Didier Deschamps has said Mbappe’s future has “no impact” on the national team.
“He is the captain of the team. As captain, he will be taken very often to a press conference, but there may be others. If he came (this Thursday), it is because he wanted to come and answer your questions. He is committed. with the group for the two matches we have. It’s not more tense than usual”, he assured.
