Athletic appoints the fans and cycling of Euskal Herria as ambassadors of May of its 125th anniversary

He Athletic has appointed the fans and cycling in Euskal Herria as ambassadors of its 125th anniversary this month of May, as reported by the Bilbao club on Thursday. On behalf of both Athletic will impose the insignia of its 125th anniversary on Joane Somarriba and Marino Lejarretaex-cyclists who are among the best in the history of Basque cycling, in an act that will take place this Saturday, in the San Mamés box, in the preview of the Athletic-Celta match.
In this way, the fans and cycling in the Basque Country are the fifth ambassadors of the 125th anniversary of Athleticand join in that list to Jon Rahm, Jokin Altuna, Honey Tahljieh, and Thomas Hitzlsperger. Joane Somarriba and Marino Lejarreta will receive the badge, the Biscayan entity specifies, because they are “two of the most relevant exponents of Basque cycling”, and they will do so “in recognition of extraordinary fans, which they have demonstrated, wherever they have traveled and, above all, in their own land, an unconditional love for cycling, and exemplary behavior in races.The sportsmanship and enthusiasm with which they have always encouraged riders regardless of the team or classification are worthy of admiration and they project positive values with which our entity identifies”, highlights Athletic, who also recalled how the club had, a century ago, “a cycling team, officially formed in 1924, which existed until the end of the 1920s twenties, and who came to compete in the most important tests of the Basque calendar”.
Athletic has pointed out how Joane Somarriba he won the Tour de France three times (2000, 2001 and 2003), the Giro d’Italia twice (1999 and 2000) and the Time Trial World Championship once (2002). For his part, Marino Lejarreta he won the 1982 Vuelta a España and obtained, among many other triumphs, stage victories in the Vuelta a España (five), in the Giro d’Italia (two) and in the Tour de France (one), in addition to three victories in the Classic of San Sebastian.

The rojiblanco club has also recalled that the 2023 Tour de France will start from Bilbao, and will contest its first three stages in Euskal Herria.
