Francis of Rome was an Italian mystic and saint of the Catholic Church who lived in Rome in the years 1384-1440. When she was young, she wanted to join a convent, but her parents had a different idea for her future and married her. She married Lawrence di Ponziani. Francis was canonized in 1609 by Pope Paul V. She is the patron saint of Rome, women, Benedictine Oblates and drivers (next to Saint Christopher). In the iconography, she is depicted as a woman with an unusually gentle face, in a black dress and white veil, often accompanied by an angel. Some artists immortalized her with a basket of bread and a bundle of wood – attributes of a person helping the poor.
