Francis of Rome was an Italian mystic and saint of the Catholic Church who lived in Rome in the years 1384-1440. When she was young, she wanted to join a convent, but her parents had a different idea for her future and married her. She married Lawrence di Ponziani. She gave birth to two sons and a daughter, but two of them died around the age of six. When her property was robbed, her husband and last son died, she devoted herself entirely to charity. In 1425, inspired by her goodness, the association of Benedictine Oblates from the Mount of Olives was founded, which brought together women similar to her – with an open heart, ready to serve other people in need.
Franciszka saw her guardian angel
When Franciszka lost her family, she joined a convent and lived at the Santa Maria Nova church near the Roman Forum. It was then that God was to reward her with numerous graces, she saw a guardian angel, supposedly whenever she needed him, he appeared by her side, giving her strength and courage. Franciszka also had various visions, during prayers she fell into ecstasy, during one of them purgatory and hell appeared to her.
Canonization of Francisca
Francis was canonized in 1609 by Pope Paul V. She is the patron saint of Rome, women, Benedictine Oblates and drivers (next to Saint Christopher). In the iconography, she is depicted as a woman with an unusually gentle face, in a black dress and white veil, often accompanied by an angel. Some artists immortalized her with a basket of bread and a bundle of wood – attributes of a person helping the poor.
