Palmeiras will face one of their recent executioners in the Copa Libertadores this Wednesday. In the 2017 edition, in the round of 16 stage, Verdão, champion of the 2016 Brazilian Championship, faced Barcelona-EQU and was eliminated in the penalty shootout, in the middle of the Allianz Parque stadium, in São Paulo. Lost 1-0 in Ecuador in the first leg, repeated the score in the victory at home, but fell by 5-4 in the decisive kicks.
If the elimination frustrated the plans at the time, the victory in that match started a series of triumphs that Palmeiras still boasts today. Since then, the alviverde team faced teams from Ecuador in six more opportunities and won all of them. Defeated Delfín (in the round of 16 in 2020), Independiente del Valle (in the 2021 group stage) and Emelec (also in the 2022 group stage) twice each.
With this winning streak, Palmeiras further expanded its good record against Ecuadorian teams in the Libertadores. Altogether there are 16 matches, with 12 wins by Verdão and only four defeats. The Brazilian club has scored 40 goals so far and conceded only 13.
In duels played in São Paulo, Palmeiras’ performance is 100% in eight matches. Away from home, the record was bad until 2020, but the three straight wins made the performance reach 50%, with four wins in eight games.
