Eight Russian judoists refused to be admitted to the 2023 World Cup due to the support of the SVO
The International Judo Federation (IJF) refused to allow eight representatives of the Russian national team to the 2023 Judo World Championships. This was reported on the website of the organization.
It is clarified that the decision was made after checking their biographical data to identify information suggesting support for the SVO. The IJF conducted a study of judokas’ workplaces and their social media profiles.
“Only athletes working at the Center for Sports Training of Russian National Teams and athletes in respect of whom no information has been revealed suggesting support for the situation in Ukraine have been allowed to participate in the World Cup,” the statement says.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in the starts. It was noted that teams from these countries cannot be considered as participants in the competition.
The World Judo Championship will be held from 7 to 14 May in Doha (Qatar). The IJF has decided to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in the tournament.
