Russian chess champion Alexei Sarana changed sports citizenship to Serbian
European chess champion Russian Alexei Sarana has changed sports citizenship. This was reported on the website of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The 23-year-old chess player will represent Serbia. In February, it became known that FIDE would allow Russian players to change sports citizenship under an accelerated program.
It was reported that the Russians will be able to represent another European country in all official FIDE individual tournaments from the day after the application is submitted, without any restrictions. The decision is connected with the transition of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) to the Asian organization.
On January 2, it was reported that Russian grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk will play under the flag of Switzerland from January 1, 2024. The athlete has been a citizen of this European country for more than ten years.
