The drug trade and all the crimes that come with it about 30 years ago were limited to Colombia and leaders like Pablo Escobar. In Ecuador it was not perceived. On the contrary, there was great national unity because of the victory achieved in Cenepa under the government of Sixto Durán-Ballén, and some still said that we are an island of peace. In a few decades, the change was radical. We are a country that no longer only transits and exports drugs, but also produces them, and the worst thing is that we have a crime problem that scares us and affects our social and production activities.

All countries from Mexico to the south have the same problem of drug addiction and its disastrous effects. North America and the European Union are large consumer markets, while Latin America produces and transports drugs, although it also consumes them. Drug dealers make enough money to buy everything they need: the venal justice of priceless judges and a flawed set of legal safeguards that allow the abuse of the rule of law and the release of convicted criminals.

Trigger IX, an unprecedented mega-operation in 15 Latin American countries in which drugs worth 5000 million dollars were seized

China has no Western scruples and is radical. The poverty of many African countries may not be of interest to drug traffickers.

It is about the fact that we are dealing with criminal organizations that operate in the West under the leadership of mafia bosses who are fighting for markets and influence. These despise life and the order to kill. That’s what assassins are for, the younger the better. Our lives are in danger because we can get caught in the crossfire between gangs or public power. The law of silence, omertá, prevails in the Italian mafias, who invented a lot on this topic. No one speaks, and if someone wants to leave, they kill and slaughter him. Murders in prisons are the work of the mafia and the Government can do little to prevent them. Who provides the weapons and how are they brought in and stored?

Diego Ordóñez’s political vision and his inexperience in security have taken a toll on his management of the Ministry of Public Security, according to analysts

We must admit that we cannot fight drugs alone. Just as there are organizations that transcend national borders, so must the struggle be global. World security is at risk and this suggests to me that the solution must be taken by the UN and its various organizations such as FAO, WHO, ILO and UNESCO. We need a global policy to fight drug trafficking. We must provide jobs, educate and feed the population of our countries. It is necessary to preach troche and moche that drug use is bad for human health, that it steals our lives. Money must be invested in rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, in schools and colleges they should learn about the values of honesty and respect, so that they know that drugs harm them, lead them to crime and deny them a future.

All this and much more must be done urgently, until humanity is prepared for the second final solution, which is the decriminalization of production, trade and consumption. Then prices will drop and the damn business won’t be so profitable anymore. Will we be able to do it? (OR)
