The fifth stage started from Lerma and ended in the Lagunas de Neila with a route of 170 kilometers. The final climb was decisive. Almeida and Miguel Ángel López (Astana) reached the final meters with a few seconds ahead of the leader Sivakov, but Joao Almeida prevailed in the duel of two. Sivakov crossed the finish line seven seconds behind the winner and sealed first place in the general classification.

Charles Channel (Euskaltel Euskadi), FRIDGE FRAME (Israel Premier Tech) and Jetse Bol (Burgos BH) starred in the break of the day. With 20 kilometers to go, the peloton picked up the pace and the breakaways had an advantage of almost two minutes. Canal tried to leave his breakaway companions behind, but it was Frigo who pushed forward and took the lead in the race alone.

In the first kilometers of the ascent to Lagunas de Neila, the peloton hunted down the Euskaltel-Euskadi cyclist. then he attacked Chris Harper (Jumbo Visma) and opened a small hole, although it could not escape. When there were two and a half kilometers left to crown the last climb of the stage, Miguel Ángel López (Astana) attacked and broke the peloton. López himself, Joao Almeida (UAE Emirates), Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and leader Pavel Sivakov arrived in a group of four at the last kilometer. It seemed that Almeida was not going to be able to keep up with the pace of his three rivals, but he attacked in the final meters, leaving Sivakov and Rodríguez behind, followed by ‘Superman’ López, but Almeida was stronger than the Colombian and won the stage win. Sivakov finished third and was proclaimed the winner of the Vuelta a Burgos.
