Pope Francis, a football fan, met on Saturday with priests, migrants, children of employees and Swiss guards who form their own team for a charity match, promoting the inclusion of the Roma community.
The Pope’s team, “Fratelli tutti” (All the Brothers), will face players from a Croatian group, the World Roma Organization, at Lazio’s training camp this Sunday. The referee of the match will be the player Ciro Immobile.
“On the field will also be a young footballer with Down syndrome, a member of the Special Olympics and three immigrants,” said the high pontiff.
“Thank you to everyone for accepting to be part of the ‘Pope’s team’. It is a team in which there are no barriers and that makes inclusion a simple normality”, he said in a statement from the Vatican.
The match aims to raise funds, an initiative by the diocese of Rome, to promote the inclusion of Roma and other vulnerable people.
