The International Paralympic Committee will decide on the admission of Russians, regardless of the IOC
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) answered the question about the admission of Russians. The words of the head of the organization, Andrew Parsons, are quoted by the Kyodo agency.
“Our position on Russia and Belarus has not changed. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a recommendation to international sports organizations, but it does not apply to the Paralympic movement,” the organization said. Parsons stressed that the IPC will make a decision on the participation of Russians in the 2024 Paralympic Games, regardless of the IOC.
On March 30, the IPC extended the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes. The organization clarified that the issue could be considered again at the General Assembly, which will meet in the third quarter of 2023.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
On November 16, 2022, the IPC suspended the membership of Russia and Belarus. It was clarified that 64 members of the organization voted for this proposal, 39 – against, 16 more countries abstained.
