Jon Izagirre (Cofidis) was proclaimed winner of the 2023 Indurain Grand Prix which was held on Saturday, April 1. in the journey of 203.2 kilometers beginning and ending in Lizarra-Estella, andhe Basque cyclist was the best.

The breakaway of the day formed early and they left the peloton Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Xabier Canellas (Electro Hyper Europe), Alessandro Fancellu (Eolo Kometa) and Matyas Kopecky (New Nordisk). The quartet came to have a maximum advantage of four minutes. With 73 kilometers to go before the finish line, Bizkarra attacked, leaving behind his teammates on the run and only remaining at the head of the race. But the adventure of the Basque cyclist ended with 62.3 kilometers to go.

Later, the platoon rolled together, but attacked javier romo (Astana Qazaqstan) and took a few meters of distance. However, his adventure did not last long and he was absorbed into the main group. On the ascent to Ibarra he tried to escape Ibai Azurmendi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), but the peloton did not let him open a gap.

Once the race entered the last 25 kilometers he attacked Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) and with him pushed forward Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana Qazaqstan). Then the UAE Emirates and EF Education began to pull the pack; Thus, they managed to hunt down Oliveira and Sánchez.

With 12 kilometers to go, Jon Izagirre attacked, but the group of favorites did not tell him to leave thanks to the acceleration of Marc Soler (UAE Emirates). Even so, Izagirre did not give up. The man from Gipuzkoa tried again, managed to escape and together with him pushed forward Sergio Higuita (Bora-hansgrohe).

The Basque and the Colombian were at the head of the race and those behind could not catch up with them. Already on the last climb to Ibarra, Izagirre left Higuita behind, he held on in the lead on the descent and achieved victory.

Higuita was second to 2 seconds of the winner and third place went to Mattias Jensen Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo), who crossed the finish line 13 seconds behind Izagirre. Alex Aranburu (Movistar) was sixth 23 seconds behind the winner.
