Ukrainian football player Roman Zozulya condemned the ban of the NOC of Ukraine to compete with the Russians
Ukrainian football player Roman Zozulya condemned the decision of the Ukrainian government to ban its athletes from competing with the Russians. The athlete spoke on the Facebook page (a social network banned in Russia; owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).
“Why continue to strain and work to prevent enemy athletes from competing when you can just ban your own? A decision in which you can really feel the thirst for struggle and victory,” said Zozulya. He added that the head of the country’s Olympic Committee, Vadym Gutzeit, “does an excellent job of burying Ukrainian sport.”
On March 31, the government of Ukraine banned Ukrainian athletes from participating in the qualifying competitions for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris along with the Russians. Earlier, the IOC recommended that members of the Russian and Belarusian national teams, who did not support the special operation in Ukraine, be admitted to the competition in a neutral status.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC. The decision on the participation of representatives of these countries in the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
