João Mário scores twice and Benfica thrash Vitória de Guimarães for the Portuguese Championship

This Saturday, Benfica received Vitória de Guimarães at home for the 25th round of the Portuguese Championship and won by 5 to 1. João Mário scored twice, Gonçalo Ramos, António Silva and Daniel Silva, against, completed the rout, while André Silva scored for the visitors.

Coach Roger Schmidt chose an offensive team for Benfica when he started the match with David Neres, Rafa and João Mário in the frame, and Gonçalo Guedes as a reference. Midfielder Fredrik Aursnes was missing for the home team.

Benfica’s posture already paid off in the 13th minute of the game, when Gonçalo Ramos took advantage of the chance inside the area and headed in to open the scoring. André Amaro committed a penalty and João Mário converted the charge in the 28th minute.

The Portuguese midfielder scored another goal in the 36th minute, with an assist from Gonçalo Ramos. The duo has already scored 33 times in the Portuguese Championship, that is, half of the goals scored by Benfica in the competition, in addition to being leader and vice-leader of the artillery.

In the second stage, the Eagles reached the fourth goal with defender Daniel Silva, who scored against his own goal in the 24th minute. In the final stretch, André Silva scored the goal of honor for Vitória de Guimarães in the 34th minute. The defender summoned to the main Portuguese selection, António Silva, still had time to score with a header and close the rout.

The result keeps Benfica at the top of the Portuguese Championship with 68 points and opens up a momentary advantage of 11 points over the vice-leader Porto, who still plays in the round. Vitória de Guimarães, on the other hand, is in fifth place on the table with 50 points added.
