Van der Poel shines and is crowned in Milan-San Remo
the dutch Mathieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin) shone this Saturday in the first ‘monument’ of the season, the ‘Classicissima’ Milan-San Remoand prevailed with a total exhibition in the demanding climb of the Poggio that served him to raise his arms alone and sign his signature in the classic of the classics.
Tadej Pogacarwho came to the first classic of the season as one of the favorites after a Paris-Nice spectacular, he crossed the finish line fourth, behind the Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos) and the Belgian wout van aert (Jumbo Visma).
Van der Poel has crowned the ‘Classicissima’ alone, with a 15-second advantage over the second after almost six and a half hours of racing.
The climb to Poggio (3.7 km at 3.7%), located 10 km from the finish line, was decisive. It was not Van der Poel who started the attack, but the UAE with the Belgian Tim Wellens who tried to separate the group and prepare Pogacar’s final attack.
But that Ganna, Van Aert and Van der Poel himself held up perfectly, seeing how the Dutchman’s deployment was overwhelming, taking meters with each pedal stroke.
Van der Poel began the descent of the Poggio already leading with several meters ahead. The pursuers tried, but Van der Poel frustrated Pogacar and company, who were exchanging positions among themselves.
