Real Sociedad has been eliminated from the Europa League this thursday to draw to zero against Roma in the second leg played at the Reale Arena. The people from San Sebastian have been far superior to the Italian team, which has focused on defending the positive result of 2-0 first leg to get through to the quarterfinals. Despite having several scoring chances, Real has failed to score, so they are eliminated from the European competition.
The first part was played at the pace set by José Mourinho’s team, which stopped all the local arrivals projected in long balls to Sorloth that the Norwegian striker failed to give continuity.
La Real couldn’t play their game with Silva and Merino tied up in areas where they do not generate danger, so the rival goalkeeper would live a good part of this period calmly.
Brais Mendez and Merino would star in the only sparks when the Gipuzkoan team opted for a greater offensive vocation and forced the Portuguese goalkeeper to intervene in the best moments of the San Sebastian team before the break.
In stoppage time, Smalling entered the local area with everything from a corner kick, scored and celebrated, but the referee consulted the VAR and saw the hand of the midfielder Smalling to invalidate the goal and give new life to the txuri-urdin complex.
Sorloth would not take advantage of it on one of the clearest occasions of the match at the beginning of the second period. Brais tugged at the glove on his left foot and left a very clear ball for the Norwegian’s shot against Rui Patricio, although his header didn’t even hit the goal.
Real’s best game arrived, but also in that football, Mourinho’s team continued to defend themselves, well behind the back, they did not see the result in jeopardy and waited for their moment to strike the decisive blow.
Mikel Oyarzabal would crash a ball into the crossbar that could have changed the sign of the last stretch of the clash, the ball was inches away from crossing the goal line and that was the end of the gunpowder for the Basque team that, despite insisting and not lowering its guard, was left out of the competition.
