Six European countries signed a declaration against the admission of Russians and Belarusians to tournaments
Six European countries have signed a declaration against the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to tournaments. This is reported by the portal Inside the Games.
The States that have made the declaration include the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia and Poland. The document was signed during a meeting of representatives of the countries with the President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine Vadym Gutzeit. “We received with surprise and indignation a statement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) dated January 25, which contained provisions that open up the possibility for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to international sports arenas,” the declaration says.
On February 20, it was reported that about 30 countries sent a letter to the IOC against the return of Russian athletes to competitions. It was clarified that the position on this issue would not change until the criteria for the neutrality of athletes for participation in tournaments were established.
At the end of January, the IOC announced that they were considering the possibility of admitting Russians to the 2024 Games in a neutral status. Competitions in Paris should be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
