Flamengo suffers, but beats Al Ahly and takes third place in the World Cup

Flamengo finished third in the Club World Cup. This Saturday, the Reds won 4-2 against Al Ahly-EGI, in Tangier.

The cariocas opened the scoring at the beginning, with Gabriel, from the penalty spot. Al Ahly drew even in the initial stage, with Abdelkader. In the final stage, the Egyptians missed a penalty, but still turned it around, again with Abdelkader.

The Africans were one player short after Abdelfattah was sent off. With one more player, the Reds came back with goals from Pedro, twice, and Gabriel, again from the penalty spot.

Vítor Pereira’s team returns to the field on Wednesday, when they face Volta Redonda, for the eighth round of the Carioca Championship.

Draw in the initial stage

Flamengo started the match better and had more ball possession. The Reds reached the goal after ten minutes, with Gabriel. Varela was knocked down in the area and the referee awarded a penalty after being called by VAR. The attacker charged the Egyptian goalkeeper with no chance.

The setback made Al Ahly look for the attack. However, the Egyptians insisted on crossings without success. Flamengo created a good chance again in the 25th minute. In a fast advance, Pedro took advantage of the cross and headed for El Shenawy’s defense. On the rebound, Gabriel sent it over the crossbar.

The scenario of the match remained the same. So much insistence, Al Ahly reached the tie in the 37th minute. After a corner kick, Abdelkader anticipated Fabrício Bruno and headed it into the net.

Flamengo solves it in the second half

In the second half, the confrontation started evenly. However, Flamengo had the first good chance, at five minutes, with Gabriel. Only the striker kicked over the crossbar.

The scare made Al Ahly increase the intensity. So much so that the Egyptians had a chance to turn around in the 12th minute, when Maaloul saw Santos save the penalty. Only two minutes later, the African team scored the second. Abdelkader received a pass in the area, passed three markers and played without a chance for the red-black goalkeeper.

The setback was felt by the cariocas. Al Ahly increased their dominance on the field and almost made the third in the 18th minute. In a good play, Percy Tau received a pass in the area, but shot close to the angle. Flamengo only responded afterwards, when Ayrton Lucas was thrown into the area and ended up knocked down. First the referee scored a penalty, but was called by VAR because the foul was outside the area. However, right-back Abdelfattah was sent off.

With the numerical advantage, Flamengo launched the attack. But Al Ahly almost doubled in a quick counterattack. Sherif was launched and finished at the entrance to Santos’ comatose area. The Red-Blacks’ response came in style, in the 31st minute. After crossing, Egyptian goalkeeper and defender collided and the ball was with Pedro, who sent it to the goal.

Flamengo maintained the offensive posture in search of victory. The red-blacks reached the third at 39 minutes. The referee scored a penalty after being called by VAR for Hany’s hand in the area. Gabriel again charged without a chance for El Shenawy.

In the final minutes, Al Ahly still sought to attack in search of a tie. However, Flamengo took advantage of the Egyptians’ mistake to declare victory in stoppage time, with Pedro.
