On February 3, Mash reported that Kostomarov was being prepared for an operation to amputate his toes. It was noted that due to the long connection to the blood oxygen saturation device (ECMO), the athlete began to die of tissues, gangrene spread to the toes.

Kostomarov was hospitalized on 10 January. He was diagnosed with left-sided pneumonia in combination with influenza B.
